The Chabad Jewish Community Center of Flagstaff, which opened in February 2006, has programming both for families in the area and for students at Northern Arizona University. The center also welcomes visitors to Flagstaff, offering Shabbat hospitality and a listing on its Web site of where to find kosher food.

The center will host “L’Chaim in the Pines,” a musical evening celebrating Jewish life in Flagstaff, 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, at a private home. The event will feature musical entertainment by Saul Kaye, an international touring artist who plays the Jewish blues; he recently visited Israel to study and write his seventh CD, “Jewish Blues, Volume Two.” He will perform songs that portray stories and messages from the Torah, brought to life through the acoustic guitar, delta-style slide guitar and soulful singing. The concert is free, contributions accepted.

This fall, the center joins other Chabad centers throughout the country, including several in the Valley, in offering an adult education course through the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI). The program kicks off in November, with its first course, “SoulQuest: The Journey, Through Life, Death and Beyond.” The class will be taught by Rabbi Dovie Shapiro, who runs the center with his wife, Chaya.

The Flagstaff Chabad also has a Hebrew school for children ages 5-13 and a summer camp, and runs the Chabad Jewish Student Center at NAU, which offers weekly Shabbat dinners, holiday and social events, classes, Birthright Israel trips and leadership opportunities.
